FAQ: CFP Body of Knowledge

Q1. ARE YOU A FPSC LEVEL 1 CERTIFICANT AND ELIGIBLE TO WRITE THE FP CANADA CFP EXAM IN NOVEMBER 2019?

The last opportunity to write FP Canada’s CFP exam before the new Body of Knowledge curriculum takes effect is November 2019.

To write the exam in November, you need to register with FP Canada by October 29, 2019. You will not be able to register without having completed an FPSC approved Capstone course. The final opportunity to complete the Advocis Capstone course will be the Summer 2019 Semester. Capstone course registration opens June 1 and closes July 17. You can access the course upon registration. The comprehensive plan submission is due September 30 and marks are released October 22.

We are expecting higher than usual registrations. You are strongly encouraged to register early in order to maximize the time required to complete and pass the Capstone course.

Q2. HAVE YOU PARTIALLY COMPLETED THE ADVOCIS CFP CERTIFICATION PROGRAM WITHIN THE YEARS 2003 TO PRESENT?

If you have partially completed the Advocis CFP Certification Program, or if you are in a position to write FP Canada’s Level 1 exam, there are two remaining opportunities to write the exam before the new Body of Knowledge curriculum is incorporated: June 2019 and November 2019.

November 2019 is the last opportunity to write the Level 1 exam before the new Body of Knowledge curriculum comes into effect. Information on the exam can be found on the
FP Canada website.

Candidates have the choice to pursue FP Canada Level 1 certification in 2019 by completing the steps on the current path or waiting until the new QAFP certification path comes into effect on January 1, 2020. Those who successfully complete the FP Canada Level 1 exam in November 2019 will receive the QAFP certification upon release of their exam results in January 2020.

Q3. DO YOU HAVE A MIX OF THE 230 SERIES COURSES AND 240 SERIES COURSES?

Advocis offers equivalences within the 240 series for 230 courses, with the exception of course FP232 (Contemporary Practices in Financial Planning), which underwent significant taxation content updates. Advocis will not be offering equivalencies for the 230 course stream after November 2019. Advocis will extend equivalencies for the 240 course series for courses successfully completed within the last four years.
